I thought it was only fitting that we start off our new weekly post of 'Throwback Thursday' with my main man - Larry Bird. What can I say, I love this guy, a genius on and off the court, being the only man in the WORLD who has taken out accolades for Most Valuable Player, Coach of the Year and Executive of the Year.
He started his career, playing college basketball in Indiana and was later drafted to play for the Boston Celtics. Larry played out his entire professional career with the Celtics, chalking up three NBA championships, 3 MVPs and was a 12-time NBA All-Star. Â
In the late 70s ratings for the NBA and crowd attendance were poor, however the arrival of 'The Legend' and his rival Magic Johnson injected some much needed rejuvenation into the sport. The contest between these two players was electric in the 80s, lending to the current rivalry that still exists between the Celtics and Lakers today.
Larry retired in 1992 and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1998. He went on to coach the Indiana Pacers from 1997 to 2000 and in 2003, assumed the role of president of basketball operations for the Pacers.
