Lauded for it’s vivid and textured designs, this years 2020-21 Panini Obsidian Basketball release certainly delivers.
A faster break than the Prizm and Donruss Optic series, Obsidian Basketball is just one pack and seven cards per box, but with a higher assemblage of autographs - a pair of signatures in each hobby box.
Top NBA rookies are again the feature of this release, but there’s more in store than just first-year talent.
The base set, while utilising chrome stock, does so with a rather dark backdrop - differentiating the cards from other brands that instead opt to use silver. The base cards as well as the parallels and inserts are really eye-catching. Take the Electric Etch, with cards that design with outlines and contrasting rainbows of color versus the standard solid backgrounds and thick borders.
With two inserts or parallel cards per box amongst the base cards. The hits to chase are a pair of autographed memorabilia sets showcasing first-year players (Rookie Jersey Autographs and dual-swatch Rookie Jersey Ink). Parallels for these are the Electric Etch in Purple, Orange, Green, Yellow, Red, and 1/1 White Mojo.
Veteran ink (Aurora and Matrix Material) debuts, and an array of other NBA talent joins the ranks within the Galaxy Autographs, Lighting Strike Signatures, Onyx Autographs, and Volcanic Signatures. Find the new horizontally cut cards with incredibly colorful etching in the Eclipse that debuts this year too.
Die-cut Pitch Black and Vitreous cards will join the inserts for a diverse set of cards to collect.
With last years release completely sold out, fans will want to keep an eye out on pre-sales in the coming weeks to ensure they get their hands on these small but mighty boxes.
