Sports cards are down and everyone is rushing to say I told you so.
Especially Vegas Dave.
Earlier this year he was telling everyone in the hobby how it was all going to crash and now he's claiming he was right because Zion and Luka prices are dropping.
But there are 2 other reasons to consider before we start calling Dave a Nostradamus of Cards:
1. Extra product lines and
2. a soft rookie class.
Manufacturers have had the feedback since early 2020 from card stores that there was not enough product to meet the demand. Stores requested more product to soak up the demand and card companies have listened. With some of the extra lines like Hoops Premium and Clearly Donurss hitting shelves the prices of sealed boxes and packs have cooled off from the heights of late 2020/early 2021.
Add to this a weaker draft class and we have a natural downward trend in prices which for most in the hobby is a welcome relief.Â
That's not to say LaMelo isn't cool - it's just that his draft class is not quite as exciting as Zion & Ja et al. If it was, I don't think we'd be talking about prices dipping quite as much as they have.
But is it all doom and gloom?
In the previous weeks we've seen new highs for certain, key cards like the PSA 10 Jordan and now the Larry Bird/Magic Johnson rookie.
